PRESENTED BY ALEYCE SIMMONDS

Sydney-based band Volky are excited about the release of their debut EP “Shine On”, a collection of 5 songs led by the title track, which they announce is “an upbeat, positive song. while this one touches on heartache, the song doesn’t dwell in the sadness. It celebrates the fact that we take chances with each other, and the fact that that there was a great love in the first place.”

Writing and performing is a cathartic experience for the band’s singer-songwriter, also called Volky, who admits “music allows me to get out all of my frustrations. I write down my thoughts, and put them in some kind of order. Whatever the situation, once it’s set in stone, there’s peace in it because it just is. I can examine it, file it away and purge.”

The band’s singer has gravitated towards music since he was a boy, admitting that, “I have a real need to make music, and my main goal is to entertain people. To see people tap their foot along to something that you wrote is so satisfying. I get a smile when people are into my songs.”

Volky, who sings and plays guitar, and Fred Lombardi, who plays drums and percussion, first met at school 20 years ago. After going their separate ways, they re-connected when Volky saw Fred play a gig, and after organizing a jam session, they’ve continued to write and perform their own brand of acoustic roots. Volky perform everything from folk to country to pop, and they say “although we have an organic sound, our goal is to have the same impact as a big rock band, except we just use a couple of bits of wood, our voices and a microphone.”
