PRESENTED BY MATT FIELD

With a sound that’s drawn comparison to Mazzy Star and The Pretenders, Sunscreen’s unique music evokes a nostalgia for summers past. The band started when Sarah Sykes invited Alexander McDonald and Hugo Levingston over for a jam in her sweaty Newtown garage in 2016. Fast-forward to 2018, with the addition of Jett Thomson on bass, and Sunscreen has recently come off the back of supporting some of Australia’s hottest acts such as the DMA’S and Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever.

Spearheaded by Alex’s instantly catchy guitar riffs, Sunscreen’s emotive guitar-pop is recognisable by the dreamy vocals of lead singer Sarah Sykes. Honing a sound that’s difficult to describe, Sykes’s vocals find power and strength in their emotional vulnerability and fragility. Sunscreen’s debut EP ‘Just A Drop’ was released in November and met with sparkling reviews, a split release between Spunk Records and Sydney-based DIY label Dinosaur City Records. The EP’s leading single ‘Tide’ has received airplay on Triple J, and high rotation on Sydney’s FBi radio. Previously, Sunscreen’s debut single ‘Voices’ was aired on rotation on ABC’s RAGE for six weeks straight, and hit nationwide rotation on Double J radio. Though Sykes was previously the keyboardist in Sydney band FLOWERTRUCK, Sunscreen is her first endeavour as a lead vocalist. 2018 is set to be a huge year for the band, as they record their debut album.

‘Sarah's voice draws you in, the band closes the door behind you, and then it's just a matter of enjoying the ride’ - Richard Kingsmill, Triple J

‘Sunscreen offer up life stories crafted as a form of therapy, and by doing so, create a world where it’s powerful to be vulnerable and brave to be emotional’ - Purple Sneakers
