PRESENTED BY LOUISE HOUGHTON
“I always like to describe it as a drink,” explains MY BABY drummer and co-conspirator Joost van Dyck. It’s rather fitting, given the band’s deliciously toxic blend of fingerpickin’ guitars, voodoo, roots, funk, gospel and Southern swampy blues. “It’s a brew loaded with the music styles we love,” he says. “We borrow from the rich history of folk music from all around the world and bring it to the moment of now.”
A fusion of Dutch and New Zealand blood, MY BABY is equal parts brother-sister-duo Joost and Cato van Dyke (vocals), guitarist Daniel “daFreez” Johnston, and all parts voodoo. Perhaps the band’s origins span far beyond simple birthright though, with their collective conception taking place somewhere between the 16 countries, 4 continents and 67,000+ km embarked since forming in 2012.
MY BABY is a vision, a muse; an undulating landscape interspersed with a stream of smooth vocals, dreamy narratives of smoking mountain peaks, mysterious shamans, diviners and drowned loves. Don’t follow? Good, it’s better that way...
