PRESENTED BY MATT CALDER

Kimwei has a unique ability to create musical landscapes using just her guitar and voice. It’s a whole new world of sounds. Her percussive guitar playing has recently been featured on the popular Sky Arts show Guitar Star.

As well as approaching the guitar from an unexpected angle (playing it horizontally, on her lap), Kimwei approaches all aspects of life a little differently. A three-door car, van and yurt are all places that she has lived. Other lifestyle experiments include her 'Fixed Gear Year' – spending 2012 using only a bike with one gear for transport, and her '£0 Challenge' in 2014. This was a commitment to face fears about running out of money, by doing so on purpose. She then successfully built back up from zero without begging, borrowing or stealing, feeling freed by this experience.
Following this, her 2014 Kickstarter campaign marked both the completion of her 3rd self-released CD Refraction & Redemption and the launch of her Pay-What-You-Like recording studio which services independent, free-range, organic musicians.

Kimwei lectures on a BA in Popular Music as part of a collaboration between the Academy of Music and Sound and Wolverhampton University (AMBA), a pioneering course taught through Skype. She’s currently based in Exeter, where her studio is housed by Widsith and Deor masked theatre company. Keep your eye out for her this summer, where you may spot her meandering around the country in her van, with her every-trusty guitar.
