Since the release of my debut album, Sugar and Stone, there has been a lot of soul searching, re-invention, redemption and a million miles under my belt, always with music at the helm,” Kember says.
“Last year I took a trip to Nashville, this further enhanced my opinion that country, soul, roots, Americana was where I belonged and my confidence in my old tunes grew,” the songwriter says. “Whilst in Nashville, I met producer Matt Coles and felt an instant connection. When I saw he had worked with Dolly Parton, Don Henley and Kelly Clarkson, I smiled on the inside and knew that I was on the right track. We decided to record a few songs.”
The result is the Gypsy Woman EP, four tracks that cut straight to the emotional core of the past seven years. ‘Rock Star’ depicts Kember’s dalliance with the music industry and TV reality shows like X Factor and Australian Idol. It’s a personal pledge to never again relinquish control of her destiny and art. ‘Disappear’ is in response to her friend’s heartache after a long-term relationship ends. ‘Donnelly’ was written on an emotional day, sitting by the brown waters of the Donnelly River. The title track is Kember’s epiphany, a moment of realisation that sees the songwriter own the decisions that brought her to this place.
And, from listening to Gypsy Woman’s assured vocal delivery and intoxicating melodies, it’s clear that this place is a seam of rejuvenating creativity.
