PRESENTED BY JAMES MAAD
The words come out with an Extremenian accent, warm and sweet, but they taste like the reddish dust flooding in the American Old West. The atmosphere mixed with Mexican sounds while folk tunes flit about. Desensitized nostalgia in which Esther Méndez speaks and Bambikina sings. The name it’s a free adaptation referring to a cinema where the Beatles slept in Hamburg.
The most immediate reality comes to the forefront: a traditional EP (Caravana), and a studio LP with experimental brushstrokes (Referencias). Esther imagines stories at dawn and BAMBIKINA arises on stage to narrate hard experiences and necessary breakdowns. Stories impregnated with Gabriel García Márquez or Julio Cortázar’s magic realism.
They have already performed at festivals like DCODE, Sonorama Ribera, WOMAD and Actual, with a sold out in the Riojan capital. They were also the opening band for Xoel López in the last show of his Paramales Tour, in La Riviera.
In the first quarter of this year 2017 BAMBIKINA was programmed in two of the major national musical circuits: Mad Town Days (Sala Arena, Madrid) and Guitar BCN (BARTS, Barcelona) and for the rest of the year have many more shows and festivals to come.
With her band (former members of The Sweet Vandals), her harmonica and her guitar, Esther Méndez has toured all over the Spanish geography playing Referencias. A powerful and exciting live show that won’t leave anyone indifferent.
