Let's play a game. Say the first word that you associate with a city. New York: metropolitan. Portland: bearded. Vancouver: sushi. Fort Macmurray: Hell. Kansas City: Reggae. Wait a minute... It may sound unlikely that Kansas City, Missouri is a hotspot for the traditional tropical rhythms pioneered by greats like Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff, but the fellows in 77 Jefferson have made it so. These Americans have been busy boys in recent years, releasing three albums and an EP since 2008, before dropping their fourth full-length, Truth And Love, on May 6th. It was touring in support of this new record that brought the band to Edmonton to perform at The Open Sky Music Festival, and they were a highlight. Along with their instruments and talents, the guys brought the perfect summertime atmosphere and attitude up to our beloved, owl-protected balcony.
While they eased out an effortless rendition of their new jam 'Cool it Down,' I think the whole balcony crew remembered the main and most important reason for getting involved with music in the first place: because it's FUN goddammit! Sharing drinks, laughs and music with new friends; reggae easing in the background... Life is bloody hard. Be sure to check out 77Jefferson.com for info on 77's tourdates, and where you can get your fiendish paws on these crucial dudes' music.
As always, thanks for checking out BTV Edmonton! Come back next Thursday for our date with Aussie Kim Churchill (ladies especially, you won't be disappointed.)
