PRESENTED BY MATT CALDER

FROM Q MAGAZINE **** FOUR STARS
The Standing Waves exist in a modern mid-Atlantic musical milieu that increasingly intersects in the related
worlds of alt-folk, alt-country and quite possibly, alt-alt.
Their songs could have been written at any time since Gram Parsons's Grievous Angel but, fortunately, they weren't. From opener Sunken Heart, which pulls off the difficult trick of being both muscular and melancholy,
like a sad poet on steroids, and Ride Around, which could actually be Parsons (with Debbie Brown as Emmylou to Will Odgers's Gram), to the slow country grace of Out On The Waves, this is a band that touch a lot of bases but never stay on them for too long.
A remarkable, assured and, despite that, never dull and often gorgeous collection
