PRESENTED BY ZACHARY JOHNSON
A New York kid from the suburbs just north of the Bronx and Manhattan, Megan Talay now straddles the two distinctly different music scenes of NYC and South Florida. Studying at the University of Miami while returning to New York to play shows between semesters, she is currently finishing up recording two new singles and is preparing for a summer of shows in the Northeast.
Megan started playing the guitar when she was 13 and began writing music while guitarist for a band during high school. Citing Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes as one of her earliest and most important influences, she filled many notebooks with song fragments which often did not see the light of day outside her bedroom. It was not until beginning college in 2010 that she started singing and performing her own personal material. Since then Talay has been finding her voice as a songwriter and performer, a journey which she acknowledges is never finished. Today she proudly identifies herself and her music as a "work-in-progress," striving for honesty in her songwriting as well as on stage, which benefit from "her gifts of potent and unpredictable lyrics as well as her uplifting and fun performance," according to John Redmond, former VP of Universal Music Publishing Canada.
Talay plays solo at small venues and songwriter showcases, as well as larger stages with her full band of drums, bass, guitar and keys. Her primary songwriting inspirations remain artists like the Counting Crows, Ryan Adams, Alanis Morissette and Ani DiFranco -- but her music also bears the distinct influence of radio pop as well as a strong rhythmic emphasis, perhaps from her love of hip hop and years of listening to Stevie Wonder and other Motown artists.
Last spring Megan released "Live From Foster" online, her first set of original songs recorded live in one session. For her latest recordings she was able to work for the first time with producer Luis Gil and recently released her first fully-produced studio track, "Rather Be in Love."
