PRESENTED BY LAKE CITY SOUNDS
The primal energy found on Mammabear's new album Say has always been a part of Kyle Gordon's sound, whether lurking in the seams of previous records or sparking an impassioned guitar riff during one of his live shows, but now Gordon's rock and roll sensibilities have been sharpened into a vessel which channels the immediacy of a sold out Saturday night show while retaining the detailed melodies which elevated previous releases.
On Say Gordon shatters the rigid boundaries of the studio and discovers a sonic immediacy that perfectly suits his unique form of power pop. The classic garage tones and '60s twang still resonate at the core of the album, but Gordon isn't satisfied with regurgitating garage rock tropes, instead finding new ways to address age-old topics of love, loss, and belonging and spawning an evolution in genre best described as Atlanta fuzz rock. Say is the seedy back alley where the Day-Glo sunshine only comes through in a trickle. There are no distractions here, just whiskey drenched rock.
Over 10 tracks, Gordon shape-shifts into a blinding blur of energy, with help from David Prasse from Slush Fund Recs, who assisted with the recording and production of the record, and who helped Gordon tap into primal rock and roll energy while retaining the attention to detail which made his 2016 album Chocolate a success. Say is Gordon's heart and soul exposed and on display for the listener, all delivered with a fiery side of raucous hooks and stomping beats.
