The title-track from Lisa Mitchell’s third album, Warriors, tells of a tight-knit crew of country kids running amok. Mitchell, who grew up in the rural border town of Albury, NSW, knows them well - they’re her younger self and the pack she once ran with.

“This album is personal,” says Mitchell. “There’s a lot of thinking about my own kind of mythology - of myself, my life, why things are the way they are. And a lot of it is to do with childhood.”

The gently unspooling song is a nod to those resilient adolescent signposts: friends, music, cars, parties, dreams, and the glacial stretching of once-fast bonds. “Though ‘Warriors’ is about me growing up in the country, it doesn’t have to physically be about it,” says Mitchell. “It’s about anyone who feels like they’re a little on the outside - these people that understand each other because they’re desperate to feel the pulse of now. I remember that. This album has that energy and I’m honouring it.”

Though Warriors is her third album, Mitchell’s adolescence is still recent history. At just 26, the musician has built a catalogue to rival elders. Mitchell’s debut EP was released when she was just 17, her second at 18; both accomplished folk pieces harbouring pop ambitions. Her full-length debut, Wonder, delivered on their promise, reaching No. 6 in Australia and going Platinum. Its follow-up, Bless This Mess, introduced a wider sonic scope, tethering lush piano-driven pop to jangly, rock flourishes. While acoustic guitar remains Mitchell’s primary songwriting tool, for her third album she decided to shake things up.
