PRESENTED BY RACHEL KIPNIS

The LA born singer-songwriter moved to Nashville to continue writing and recording just under a year ago and has quickly found himself writing honestly about facing the ambiguity of life, loneliness, and the hunt for tranquility amidst our inner chaos.
Jake writes with humility and sincerity that set in place a charmingly somber and ambient theme for his music. Crafting his songs this way doesn't mean Jake lives there perpetually, in the trenches, defining the trials we face as untreatable. His songs are his way out. He's telling us that he's a realist and ultimately an optimist, but that sometimes we as humans can't understand why we feel a certain way, or articulate what it is that is pulling us down.
Jake's songs drive his listeners to an immediate and unexpected self dialogue; to introspection. They force one to go to the place within themselves where they wouldn't normally go, the place that draws out the tough questions we have for ourselves, but have neglected to ask.

"Orange County’s Jake McMullen released a solo EP while he was still in his teens, and last year had a run fronting the band York, whose EP “I Might” displayed the young songwriter’s continuing explorations in roots music. With York having gone by the wayside, he’s back to making music under his own name, collaborating with Ellex Bree on the new EP “Ellex Bree & Jake.” It’s six songs (three from each artist) of varying-degrees-of-stripped-down folk music, recorded in Nashville, and at its most powerful on “Four Letter Word.” Here, the 20-year-old’s songcraft conspires with his older-than-his-years voice to conjure up some of the great folk troubadours — spacious, evocative and natural. McMullen may be on the back porch somewhere, still sipping lemonade, but we’ll have something a bit stronger, thank you." -Kevin Bronson of Buzzbands.LA
