PRESENTED BY SINEAD BOLAND
Glassgears is a rock/punk/power pop band out of Dublin, Ireland. Formed in 2013, the lineup features Luke Solecki on lead guitar and backing vocals, a known cat enthusiast, angry vegetarian and tech guru; Rachel ‘Ray’ McDermott on lead vocals and rhythm guitar – a mad feminist who lays the foundations for most of their songs, Sarah Sherlock on bass, a composer and soundscape technician, Claire Flanagan on keys/synths, the group hipster and a classical music fanatic, and Jonny Fealy on drums, a self-described country boy, party freak and the band’s undeniable voice of reason.
Originally formed as an instrumental band, they had all been gigging and recording in other projects around Dublin, but found an undeniable musical chemistry between them that instantly clicked into their own unique style. The name itself reflects the diversity – and sometimes adversity – they represent: individual musos coming together to form something greater than the sum of their parts. Coming from wildly different walks of life, different cultures and upbringing, they successfully integrate a diverse range of musical influences that include Green Day, A Perfect Circle, Paramore and Pearl Jam, their sound a mashup of styles derivative of metal, prog rock, post-punk, stoner and straight up four on the floor rock and roll. Their name, as well as their unique style, reflects a concept that should not work, but remains strong in spite of the odds. Glassgears should shatter, but in this rare instance, they do not. Their debut EP, The Right Side, was released in 2014, and they are currently working on a follow up, having recently signed a recording and publishing contract with Los Angeles based label Preston Bevrly Group.
