PRESENTED BY LAYLA ANNA-LEE
Singer, songwriter and pianist Elsa Chapmans growing reputation as one of the UKs most exciting young powerhouse vocalists has taken her to stages across the world. She has opened for and toured with Grammy-winner and world music legend Youssou NDour and her music is played regularly over the airwaves in her native Senegal. In the UK, she has been the voice of national television commercials, while also reaching audiences in the US, through Virgin Megastores, national magazine distribution and college campuses. Now based in London, she performs regularly with her trio at venues across the UK, including Glastonbury Festival, the Roundhouse and Koko.
To classify Elsas music simply as piano-led soul would be an understatement. Her soul-pop mélange hints towards the classical influences of her upbringing, has reflections of a teenage addiction to RnB and a thick coating of badass pop. Melodically sophisticated, often rhythmically playful, and always drenched with her innate soul sensibilities, her songs are relatable, honest and lyrically mature.
Now, Elsa is recording her debut release in London. Living up to her role as an independent artist, she truly is just that: artistically independent. Having attracted the support of many top-rated musicians, including the Nexxmen (Ne-Yo, Brandy), Ali Tennant (Lemar, Mutya) and Peter Biker (Monica, Sugababes), she has now emerged in her own right to produce the set herself. Influenced by her love for performing live, that organic spontaneity and live energy is something that Elsa brings with her to the studio. Being compared to artists as diverse as Rihanna, Norah Jones and Stevie Wonder suits her just fine: being defined as one thing has never suited this mixed-race, cross-over artist.
Currently making her mark on the UK, Elsa continues to prove that she is a talent to be reckoned with. Gifted, ambitious, hard working and headstrong, Elsa Chapman is here and shes ready.
Tune in again tomorrow!
