How to describe Ben Olson? I shall attempt. Short. Tattooed. Oddly intimidating for a man standing five foot seven (perhaps due to the knife always clipped in his back pocket.) Sensitive. Wait... What?
The latter may seem out of place, but Ben joined us fourteen stories up to play a heartfelt song about the passing of his Wife's father. 'Farmer's Fields' is one of fifteen tracks found on his debut solo record With Nothing Framed (out today, how's that for timing?) offering songs about love, loss, and how it is for a punk rocker growing up in conservative and oil-hungry Northern Alberta. Somehow Ben found the time to record it between tours and records with his band The Old Sins and he'll support the folk- punk explosion of a record on tours out west in July, and a Cross-Canada haul in September. We are very proud to offer this video of Ben, who has become one of Edmonton's most active and motivated musicians. You can track down the record and more info on Ben at BenOlson.Bandcamp.com. As for the knife? Just listen to the record and you'll figure it out.
The BTV crew had a great time at Edmonton's Open Sky Music Festival last weekend, and were privileged to film some great international acts. Over the next month stay tuned every Thursday for some Southern U.S reggae, Australian heartthrobs, Prairie Troubadours, and of course, Edmonton talent. Summer is here and the living is easy.
