Many tracks on Black Sands evoke sharp, perhaps clichéd,urban sophistication. ‘Kong’ isthe epitome of urban lounge music; it’s light moaning vocals blend well withthe chime melody and muted base. Iguarantee this song you’ll here this song in a commercial soon. ‘El Toro’channels more traditional lounge music, heavy on the instrumentals: horns, cymbals, guitars, blended into all blended into an alluring smoothy. Again, another track that’ll be snagged for a hip (car or restaurant, I presume)commercial.
‘We Could Forever’ and it’s successor track ‘The Keeperfeat. Andreya Triana’ channel somedeep early 1990’s house roots, with Triana’s deep husky voice and jazzyaccompaniments. Bonobo’s tracks ofthis persuasion generally sound a bit too dated to be alongside the cooleredgier tracks.
Black Sands will have definite fans. It’s a must if you want to create moodfor your cool caff or bistro restaurant, or great after hour’s house partymusic. For those more experimentalat heart or don’t enjoy cliché hip music, the last two tracks are a nicesurprise and worth buying the album for alone. ‘Animals’ features a clarinet, piano and some sweet bass.‘Black Sands’ features muted guitar plucking over defining baselines, evokingParis, autumn and lovely girls.
