The Albums name, TeenDream, is a perfect descriptor for Alex Scally & Victoria Legrand’s heartmelting pop.
What divides Beach House from the indie pack is Legrand’sethereal voice. The melodies aresweet but grounded in her deep, legato voice. The rest is kept simple, with driving beats (usually themain beat being piano or synth based) and light guitar/synth work. ‘SilverSoul’ is monumental with it’s matching melodies and legato guitar, “it is happening again” on repeat makes the lyrics attach themselves to life’s memories. In ‘Real Love’ her voicefloats into the higher octaves and allows the simple piano chords to drive the song. ‘Take Care’ incorporates melodies reminiscent of 1950’ slow dance songs but again her dragging slow voice ties it to the modern day.It’s lyrics are also really sweet, “I’ll Take Care of you, if you ask meto”….perfect for dancing to with your sweetie on V-Day.
Beach House has distinguished themselves amongst the nostalgic indie acts with their dream pop music by just seductively suggesting previous musical eras instead of banging us on the head with them.
