10 Years On - Siobhan O'Brien

10 Years On - Siobhan O'Brien

As we approach BalconyTVs 10th anniversary, I thought it would be interesting to interview some of the first artists that performed on the show and find out what has happened to them in the time since.

Siobhan O'Brien performed on September 13th, 2006. I tracked down Siobhan on a cruise liner for a chat...

Stephen - Siobhan, you were one of the first artists to perform on BalconyTV. What, if anything do you remember about the performance?

Siobhan - I remember there was no host so we had to introduce ourselves. When we had finished someone screamed up to the balcony because it was so unusual for people be singing on a balcony but not facing the street. The song was Bodies In Bodybags written by my friend Eamonn Hehir.

Stephen - How long had you been playing to that point?

Siobhan - I had been playing 19 years at that point.

Stephen - What were your ambitions then, compared to what they are now?

Siobhan - My ambitions then we're trying to get heard on Irish TV and radio. Waste of time and energy. Now I am concentrating on America. I will be moving there on an Artist Visa in 6 months.

Stephen - Very cool! What have you made of the digital revolution in the last 10 years?

Siobhan - I have moved with the digital revolution. I'm not as tech savvy as most but most of my sails worldwide are through digital download through CD BABY. Nice to actually get paid once in a while.

Stephen - What do you make of the Irish music scene?

Siobhan - The Irish Music scene? I don't know what it is!! I know I can't make a living performing in Ireland. I think it's a crying shame that not more is done to make Irish radio stations play more Irish Artists! Even having to say 'make' is a joke. And I'm talking about daytime radio. I hate that radio only sees music as having to be certain genre! Ireland is too small for the amount of talent out there.

Stephen - What advice would you give to the you of 10 years ago?

Siobhan - Don't think that it's cool to not be making money! You know the snobbery around 'selling out' is a cop out. We have to make money! You are skilled at making music. You should be paid! You can do both. Make money and music.

Stephen - What has been the best thing to happen to you in music and life in the last 10 years?

Siobhan - That I didn't give it up!

Stephen - What is the one song of yours your most proud of that people should check out?

Siobhan - Guilty Of Despair. Video made by JD Thompson in Oklahoma in 2013.

Stephen - Who has been your favorite Irish artist of the last 10 years, and your favorite international or mainstream artist?

Siobhan - Irish - Declan O'Rourke or Snow Patrol.

Siobhan - International - Bon Iver or First Aid Kit.

Stephen - Final question. What would your words of wisdom be for anyone starting out? Be as brutal as you like.

Siobhan - Don't expect much and love it.
