10 Years On - Douglas Bermingham / Emersons Kitchen

10 Years On - Douglas Bermingham / Emersons Kitchen

As we approach BalconyTVs 10th anniversary, I thought it would be interesting to interview some of the first artists that performed on the show and find out what has happened to them in the time since.

Drummer and bass player Douglas Bermingham performed with his band Emersons Kitchen on September 26th, 2006. I tracked down uncle Doug for a catch up -

Stephen - You were one of the first artists to perform on BalconyTV with your band. What, if anything do you remember about the performance?

Doug - Playing outside, on a tiny balcony...with Dublin milling about us.

Stephen - What was the song about?

Doug - I think it was called 'Shine' so I guess it was about shining!

Stephen - How long had you been playing before that point?

Doug - OOOh, about 25 years.

Stephen - What were your ambitions then, compared to what they are now?

Doug - Radio airplay, success in music...the usual.

Stephen - Are you still performing now? if not what do you do now?

Doug - Unfortunately not. I'm a Care Worker now and fortunately I love my job.

Stephen - The internet has completely transformed music in the last 10 years. When we started out, YouTube was just starting and MySpace was the thing. How have you found dealing with the digital revolution?

Doug - I love it! Except maybe for compressed music files, gimme vinyl anyday.

Stephen - What do you make of the Irish music scene?

Doug - Long answer...I had completely given up on hearing anything descent, what with the '...Got Talent' crap all over the airwaves. Then I discovered TXFM who play alternative and new Irish music. Of course they're shutting down but at least I know where to look for original music now.

Stephen - If you could give the you of 10 years ago advice, 10 years on, what would it be?

Doug - Be patient, and a little less impulsive.

Stephen - What has been the best thing to happen to you in music and life in the last 10 years?

Doug - My wife and children, my last band 'Handsome Handsome' and securing a permanent job.

Stephen - What is the one song of yours your most proud of that people should check out?

Doug - A track called 'Stingray', its up there on Soundcloud -

Stephen - Who has been your favorite artists of the last 10 years?

Doug - All Tvvins and Coldplay.

Stephen - Final question. What would your words of wisdom be for anyone starting out? Be as brutal as you like.

Doug - Be prepared to tour a lot and for gods sake stop doubting yourself!

Stephen - I'll try! Thanks Doug!
