As we approach BalconyTVs 10th anniversary, I thought it would be interesting to interview some of the first artists that performed on the show and find out what has happened to them in the time since.
Caitriona McGuinness performed with her band Bailer on August 18th, 2006. I tracked down Caitriona for a catch up -
Stephen - Caitriona, you were one of the first artists to perform on BalconyTV. What, if anything do you remember about the performance?
Caitriona - I remember being a bit nervous as I wasn't sure what to expect but also excited. All the people were so lovely too.
Stephen - What was the song about?
Caitriona - The song is called 'Watch Out'. It's about being conscious of everything around you but having confidence in yourself to hold your ground.
Stephen - How long had you been playing before that point?
Caitriona - God knows! We have been together forever!
Stephen - What were your ambitions then, compared to what they are now?
Caitriona - To be able to play music for a living and not to have to work doing anything else! My ambition would still be the same to be honest. It would be fabulous to be able to dedicate all my free time to what I love to do.
Stephen - Are you still playing?
Caitriona - We just finished off our second album called 'Hearts and Lies' last year before I went on maternity leave and have been on a small break since. We're hoping to pick things back up where we left off later on in the year! In the meantime I have been doing backing vocals for other artists for fun.
Stephen - What do you make of the Irish music scene?
Caitriona - It seems to have gotten better. There are a lot more new Irish bands having success which is very encouraging.
Stephen - If you could give the you of 10 years ago advice, 10 years on, what would it be?
Caitriona - Take more chances, have fun and don't be afraid of making a fool of yourself, they're the moments that are more memorable than the perfect set.
Stephen - What has been the best thing to happen to you in music and life in the last 10 years?
Caitriona - The best thing in music was to be able to play the Point, Vicar St and the Olympia. Amazing venues! Best thing in life is my beautiful baby girl Croía and my fabulous husband who supports me in everything I do.
Stephen - What is the one song of yours your most proud of that people should check out?
Caitriona - I find it hard to just pick one. Off the new album 'Hearts and Lies' definitely check out 'Too close to see', 'Burn the candle at both ends' and 'Lily'.
Stephen - Who has been your favorite Irish artist of the last 10 years, and your favorite international or mainstream artist?
Caitriona - I love Walking on Cars and Sia.
Stephen - Final question. What would your words of wisdom be for anyone starting out?
Caitriona - Try everything no matter how nuts it seems, don't be afraid to keep asking for advice, commit 100% and believe in yourself.
Stephen - Thanks Caitriona!
