Hello, you Balcony TV addict! I'm the French intern! I have been here for a week, coming straight from Grenoble, a town located in the South East of the country, sourrounded by the Alps; 1 hour to get to the ski resorts, 2 hours to get to the sea. Who said "perfection" ? : D
I've just finished my first year in Business School (Grenoble Ecole de Management), and I would like to work in either movie or music production, that is to say the two cultural fields I am the most interested in. Balcony TV is my first professional experience in the field of music. However, I have been writing album and gig reviews for about a year. I have a better knowledge of how to work in the movies, on a small scale anyway : I used to make short movies with my friends during highschool, then wrote kind of a sci-fi TV show script, and started to gather people in order to create a Star Wars fanfilm ; unfortunately, we had to stop, because of a lack of time and a low-budget.
But let's talk about music : I was raised listening to French singers and bands (Gainsbourg, Brassens, Telephone...). Then I started to play the trumpet, and to listen to classical music (Tchaïkowski, Bach, Saint-Saëns, Debussy...) and blues/jazz (Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Wynton Marsalis...). I still enjoy these kinds of music, but I am now more a rock listener, especially grunge. Pearl Jam is my favorite band ever, and I can't spend a day without playing Soundgarden's "Loud Love", Mad Season's "Above" or Alice in Chains' "Jar of Flies". I wish I had not been only 1 year old in 1990...And here are, higgledy-piggledy, other bands I play a lot these days : Sixteen Horsepower, Isobel Campbell, Mark Lanegan, The Gutter Twins, Queens of the Stone Age, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Them Crooked Vultures...
Last paragraph : noticed there is no French singer/band above ? These are my two favorite ones : Alain Bashung (viewed as the greatest French singer of the last two decades) and Noir Désir (a rock band full of energy, with well-written lyrics, even in English). My advice for today : as soon as you can, listen to Bashung's "Fantaisie Militaire" and Noir Désir's "666.667 Club" : you won't be disappointed !
