Awake! Awake!
Song: “Disarmed”
Album: “Bittersweet Horizon”
Music: (Andrew Goodwin)
The initial music idea didn't come from playing guitar for hours or
revisiting an old idea. It was instant! By instant I mean I was
watching Catch Me if You Can one afternoon on TV. The film snapped to
a commercial break and the opening riff for "Disarmed" began playing
in my head. I immediately jumped up, grabbed my guitar and began
playing it. I'd never heard it so I knew I'd better not lose it. I
then recorded a demo and played it for the band a few days later. We
added a bridge and David came up with the vocal melody that sealed the
music. This song was one of the lucky ones, because it just happened.
Lyrics: (David Johnson)
Andrew gave me the new idea and I immediately went to work trying out
melodies! Several got scrapped but ultimately, I think the words and
the mood meshed very well. The song’s really about relationships and
our expectations of them…and how those often don’t match up with
reality. There’s a line in the chorus that says “we’ve…seen our share
of heartbreak” and that’s obviously true of everyone. So the song
basically asks…what if we started from there in the first place? What
if, at the start, we were humble, honest, and aware of our pride and
of our shortcomings? To have a broken heart at the very beginning, if
you will. Because life takes a toll and sometimes we can’t see the
damage we’ve done until it’s in our face. So the hook of the chorus
pleads, “To escape the stealth of the dark, let if fall down, let it
start…let it start with a shattered heart.”
