ALAN ALDA on the bill!!!

Alan Alda are added to bill of the BalconyTV Music Video Awards on June 9th. They should be kicking off at about 8.15! We encourage people to get to the gig as early as possible! Don't forget...free admission! Bring everyone!

We will be filming the whole evening. Logistically trying to work everything out is a bit of a nightmare right now.

We have over 450'000 video views now according to YouTube stats. Thats over 1350 views per show! Not bad. Ticking over nicely.

Saw This Is England yesterday. Fantastic. But it left me moody for the rest of the day!

NO MORE INTERNET

Sorry about the increasing street noises in the videos. I will have to admit that something has to be done. I think its time to look seriously at a new mic-ing solution.
It´s very depressing.

Apart from all the apartment is officially internet free, after we finally cancelled our Clearwire agreement.

This happened after our Clearwire box fell of its delicate perch next to the sink...and smashed on the ground.

When I rang up to cancel the account (because of the overall dodgy internet signal), they suggested I needed to pay 250Euro for the broken box!

Not a chance!

So if anyone works for an internet service provider...please help us out! At the moment I need to go to the local internet cafe to take care of business. No good!

More Info on the Awards

So just a bit of information regarding what is happening regarding the BalconyTV Music Video Awards.

Basically, as BalconyTV.Com will be officially 1 Year Old...we decided the best idea was to jump onboard the award show racket.

We are just finalising the live music line up for the show at the moment, which is coming together very nicely.

The nominations for the awards will be announced soon...and we have a cracking judging panal lined up...to decide upon them.

And best of all...the night will be no cost to attend. We want the best party atmosphere...and the whole of the real Irish music scene there.

So keep watching this space for updates.

And mark down the 9th of June in your calenders!

HISTORY OF 81 DAME STREET

I was very interestingly sent the history of our building yesterday.

What I can tell you of possible interest is that a man named Mick Humphrys, from Murroe, Co.Limerick,
went to Dublin. He became a publican, helping his brother.
The bar they ran was at 49 Great Britain St (now Parnell St). This building is now demolished, the site is part of the Ilac Shopping Centre,

He went on to own and run a pub at 81 Dame St, Dublin, that is now called The Oak,
the pub was established in 1860. The pub would have been called Humphrys' pub when he ran it. His surname, spelt "Humphrys" (the old way), is in a tiled floor at the door of the pub, dating from c.1920,

When his nephew Dick Humphreys first set up in business as O'Mara's Rubber Co. 1922, he located 2 doors away from his uncle, at 79 Dame St. Sadly the families were to fall out over politics during the Civil War 1922-23; Mick was Free State; his brother's family were strong Republicans. He lived over the pub. Apparently the top part of the building was destroyed during the Civil War and had to be re-built; this could explain bitterness of the family split.

He lived over the pub for a long time, and later bought house on North Circular Rd until his died May 1934, age 74 yrs.

The pub at 81 Dame St is listed as "Terence P. O'Donnell, licensed grocer" in [Thom's, 1945]. Not yet called The Oak.

81 Dame St was re-decorated in 1946 with an interior of wood from the RMS Mauretania. The Mauretania was the sister ship of RMS Lusitania. It was launched 1906, and was then the largest passenger ship in the world. It also held for many years the record for fastest crossing of Atlantic. It was scrapped 1935, furnishings sold at auction.

After the re-decoration with the ship's wood, the name of the pub was changed 1946 to The Oak. The Oak was a gay pub in the 1970s-80s.

The Thomas Read Group now own The Oak.

They are named after the adjacent Thomas Read's Cutlers shop at 4 Parliament St, which was until it closed the oldest surviving shop in Dublin (shop dates from 1670, current building from 1760s). The Thomas Read Group bought it when it closed.

The Oak is now joined internally to the trendy "Thomas Read" cafe and bar next door.

On the roof of The Oak is the music video site Balcony TV.

Thanks to Mark Humphreys for the information. If anyone has any more information about the building or the Humphreys family, feel free to pass it on to us and we will pass it on to Mark.

A SAD SAD ENTRY

Its very embarressing watching the Eurovision Song Contest with a bunch of foreigners when Ireland comes paddy last. Especially as I told everyone that Ireland had a quiet chance.

Ofcoarse we didn´t have a hope...as our song was completly kack. Although I did put up an argument that our song was the only song in the competition which at least attempted to represent our musical heritage...the rest was just a stew of camp pop.

Also watching the Eurovision with a bunch of foreigners, you begin to realise how beautiful the people of the continent are compared to us. When it came around to the voting section, the various foreign representives chosen to read out the jury results were a mix of stunning women and brutish men...i began to worry. Oh god...whos going to represent Ireland...who will be the face of Ireland this year?

I began to wish stupid things. Hmmmm, maybe RTE will be clever...maybe they will get Glenda Gilson...Rosanna Davidson...Andrea Corr...

But no...intead they got Linda Martin.

Now usually I would never dream of critisising Linda Martin...but with the usual overdose of RTE make up and dodgy lighting...well...lets just say, it was a bit frightening. She had a huge astronauts wife haircut too. I have a feeling that if you were to go back in time...all the way to the year...1960...our Jury representative would look exactly the same.

I was hoping we would finish ahead of the UK...just for the sake of competition...but that didn´t work out as we gave them 12 points...and they gave us nothing!

I was really disappointed by the new voting system too. I missed the last couple of Eurovisions...but when did they start just announcing the top 3 points...and not the usual 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10,12.

The voting is what the Eurovision is all about dammit!

I didn´t care too much for the winning song...I much preferred Russias entry. THe reasons are obvious.

Yes its true...I´m a Eurovision geek!

AWARD SHOW

So this type of business is very much a ratings game and you start becoming obbsessed with them. But I reckon after announcing that we have over 400´000 video video views on YouTube overall, that that makes about 50,000 extra views in the last twenty days, which is not bad. Its not amazing. Buts it not bad.
By the way ladies and gents, we are officially announcing THE BALCONYTV MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS. What do you think about the poster design?

LOTS OF WATCHES

Over 400´000 video views combined for BalconyTV on YouTube. Not bad at all. That averages at over 1300 video videos for each of the 304 videos we have.

Kudos to us. And to the fantastic music, and comedians, and bellydancers, and football skills guys.

KRIS KROSTOFFERSON

Sorry there was no new show yesterday. We'll blame Clearwire or Youtube for that. On second thoughts, we won't blame youtube.

I had this amazing dream that we had Kris Kristofferson on BalconyTV. But when I needed to upload the show I couldn't find the tape. The whole dream was me rooting for the bloody tape. Twas quite stressful.

I'm not even familiar with Kristoffersons work. But then again I did see Fast Food Nation a couple of nights ago. Kris has a cameo appearance. Thats was probably triggered the dream.

The film is a let down I must say. A definite case of the book is better than the film. And I hate when people say that.

I love this music video...

NO JUSTICE

Tom has had the all clear from the dentist. I don´t believe it! And he said hes never been to the dentist in his life! And I woke up in the middle of the night in excruciating pain. Needed some painkillers!

TEETH

So I've once again fallen out of the habit of posting. I guess there has not been so much to write about.
I went to the dentist yesterday and had 3 fillings! And i'm due back very soon for another 3!
Warning to all! Coke is bad for your teeth!
Coincidently Tom is going to the dentist today.
Paulines teeth are perfect on the other hand.
